A new bathroom should look good, but it also needs to work comfortably every day. Before choosing taps and tiles, think about what you would like to improve.
You might need better storage, a more practical shower, a different layout or a complete replacement of the existing suite.
Agree what the renovation includes
For a full bathroom refurbishment, ask for a clear scope covering removal of the existing fittings, preparation, plumbing, electrical work, tiling, flooring and installation of the new suite.
Specify the bath, basin, toilet, shower glass and furniture you have chosen—or agree clear allowances where decisions are still outstanding.
Discuss waterproofing beneath the tiles in wet areas. Suitable waterproofing systems are designed to form a barrier beneath the finished surfaces and must be installed according to their requirements.
Think about everyday use
Check that doors and drawers can open comfortably. Consider lighting, ventilation, cleaning and access for future maintenance.
Electrical alterations near a bath or shower, and certain plumbing changes, may also require Building Regulations approval. Confirm the requirements for the proposed work.
